Meet the contemporary woodwind quintet: flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon
Cirrus Blue is dedicated to creating new music through collaboration, curiosity, and artistic excellence. Bringing together musicians from universities across the United States, we partner closely with composers to commission, perform, and record works that expand the woodwind repertoire. Our work is rooted in exploration, shaped by open collaboration, and driven by a shared belief that the most meaningful music grows from genuine creative partnerships.
Our Story
2023–2026 | Camerata Nova
At Western Illinois University, three of Cirrus Blue’s founding musicians, Andrea Baker, Charlie Chadwell, and Paul Chinen, came together to establish Camerata Nova, a contemporary woodwind quintet dedicated to expanding the repertoire for flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, and bassoon. Julianna Eidle joined the ensemble for its second season, and together they commissioned and premiered new works by Katherine Pukinskis, Hong Da Chin, Matt Mason, and Paul Berlinsky. The ensemble performed at conferences including the International Double Reed Society, North American Saxophone Alliance, and the College Music Society, while building lasting relationships with composers.
2026–present | Cirrus Blue
Building on Camerata Nova’s foundation, clarinetist Bryce Newcomer joined Andrea, Charlie, Paul, and Julianna to form Cirrus Blue. With members now based at universities across the United States, the ensemble carries its commitment to new music beyond a single institution, bringing together longtime friendships, new collaborations, and a shared passion for creating and performing exceptional contemporary chamber music.
